A common mission
Equina was founded in 2020 by Muneer Hameer (CEO) and Gilles Ethier (COO), who met in an online software forum.
“As a Los Angeles emergency physician, I’d been an eyewitness to hospital scheduling fiascoes on a daily basis. It got me thinking: there’s got to be a better solution for smarter scheduling, where job distribution is more balanced, and personnel preferences are more of a priority,”
Gilles Ethier, a former Finance Manager at Blackberry, adds: "I was always on the hunt for better scheduling methods for my team. When we met, we realized our mission was the same, and the rest is history."
Order amid chaos
The global pandemic came crashing down shortly after Equina was founded. “Maybe it sounds weird, but it was perfect timing. The healthcare sector was being pummeled, and scheduling efficiently was more pressing than ever,” says Hameer. The name Equina was inspired by the Latin word for horses (equi), symbolic of strength and elegance. And that reflects the scheduling platform’s core values: reliability and convenience. “Interest in our product took off quickly. It was clear: The healthcare industry was desperate for order amid the chaos,” Hameer says.
“We aimed to eclipse the competition by integrating AI into our solution,” the founders explain. To achieve that goal, they asked Timefold for support. “We already had ties with Timefold and knew they could take our platform to the next level with their software.”

Equina’s current focus is healthcare, with workforce scheduling as priority no. 1. “But later, we’d like to expand. We’re still working closely with Timefold to explore what our next steps could be, e.g., appointment management and capacity planning. Our scheduling software has serious potential, not just for healthcare but for other sectors, too. We’re also gradually gaining a foothold in the European market. We’ve only just begun... The sky is the limit,” Hameer and Ethier conclude.
